The Home Page Program Courses
Learn more about our free evening classes for Grier Heights neighbors!
The Home Page Program wants to make a difference in this historic landmark neighborhood.
Grier Heights, located in Charlotte’s southeast quadrant, spent most of the 20th century as a small farming community and is now a residential neighborhood of about 3,500 people.
Grier Heights was established in the 1890’s when former slave Sam Billing purchased 100 acres — the first time an African American bought land in Charlotte. In the 1920s, Grier Heights built its first school, Billingsville School, which now houses the Grier Heights Community Center. Grier Heights’ importance to historic Charlotte as well as to Black America is inestimable. It beautifully symbolizes the beginning of landholding independence of African Americans in the South.
Tragically, Grier Heights is at risk of losing its distinctive identity due to gentrification and a lack of access to resources. Grier Heights residents have been struggling through the pandemic while at the same time fearing losing capital through rental companies buying houses. Many residents would be able to pursue further education and make more money if only they had access the same resources and opportunities as many other Charlotte communities.
The Home Page Program is here to serve as a hub for community resources. We partner with community organizations to provide technology, internet access, and technical support to those in need.
We want to help all families learn, work and play from home, and as technology advances we want to make sure no one is left behind. We are starting by assisting community members in getting new computers, as well as technical, job, and mental health support at the Digital Block Party on May 22, 2021. And this site will continue to be a resource for the community.
